U.S. Department of Defense Patient Safety Program Partnering For a New Level of Care

2010 Patient Safety Awareness Week: Healthy Conversations for Safer Healthcare

2010 Patient Safety Awareness Week –
Let's Talk: Healthy Conversations for Safer Healthcare.

Spearheaded by the National Patient Safety Foundation, Patient Safety Awareness Week (PSAW) is a national education and awareness-building campaign for improving patient safety at the local level. Hospitals and healthcare organizations across the country are encouraged to plan events to promote patient safety within their own organizations.

From March 7th through the 13th, the DoD Patient Safety Program (PSP) will once again support Patient Safety Awareness Week with a variety of activities and events highlighting the importance of patient safety, while showcasing some of the numerous patient safety success stories.

How do we use healthy conversations for safer healthcare?
The DoD PSP fosters a culture of trust and transparency through communication, coordination and teamwork. We provide a variety of tools designed to continue to improve the safe delivery of care to all 9.6 million TRICARE beneficiaries, such as:

  • Patient Safety Learning Center (PSLC): Used by the three services and among the numerous military treatment facilities both in the United States and overseas, the DoD PSLC promotes communication and increases awareness across the patient safety community. This Member-based community Wiki (or web portal) enables community Members to access and contribute lessons learned, best practices, tools and resources, news articles, community events, and much more. DoD personnel can register for an account by navigating to the PSLC registration page.
  • TeamSTEPPS®: The Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS)  system improves communication and other teamwork skills among healthcare providers who reliably deliver safe, high quality care. With ready-to-use materials and training curricula, TeamSTEPPS improves patient safety and quality healthcare through spread, impact and sustainment.
  • Learning Action Network (LAN) Webinars: Our interactive monthly seminars focus on a specific patient safety topic. Expert presenters share the latest evidence, best practices, lessons learned and success stories from within the DoD and civilian healthcare settings.
  • Patient Safety Reporting (PSR) System: Currently being piloted in nine Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs), the PSR is a Web-based tool that enables enterprise-wide reporting of both medication- and non-medication-related patient safety events, including near misses. An anonymous, secure confidential and easily-accessible online tool, the PSR will help foster conversations around safety trends and how to improve care. Patient Safety is a shared responsibility that hinges on communication and collaboration. During this week, the DoD PSP will share examples of DoD leaders and healthcare providers who have embraced and implemented the patient safety culture and will highlight our products and services that help this happen.
