Dr. Paul R. Cordts was appointed the Director, J-5, DHA in July 2017. As J-5 Director, Dr. Cordts leads strategic planning around the complex challenge of building an integrated delivery system for readiness and health at the MHS. The J-5 priorities include proposing strategy, innovation and future plans for achieving MHS and DHA priorities; coordinating design and implementation planning for an integrated health system; developing requirements in support of MHS and DHA strategy; and establishing a framework for enterprise learning supported by analytics, decision support, incentives design, data management, and functional integration of the electronic health record (EHR) and enterprise requirements.

As the MHS Functional Champion since October 2016, Dr. Cordts serves as the Department of Defense representative for the clinical, business, operational and technical community on matters relating to the implementation of new health information technology in the MHS. He is a single “voice of the customer” in the implementation of MHS GENESIS, the Department’s $4.3B EHR that began deployment in 2017, and serves as the medical community’s liaison to the Program Executive Office at the Defense Health Management System. Dr. Cordts was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in July 2015.

Dr. Cordts retired from the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 2014 after 30 years of service, where he served as a physician and leader at every level of the Army command structure. He served as Hospital Commander at Ft. Stewart, GA and Ft. Campbell, KY, and he served on the staff of the Army Surgeon General, as well as Lead Physician for Army Medicine’s Performance Triad (Sleep, Activity and Nutrition). Dr. Cordts also deployed as a vascular surgeon during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Dr. Cordts is Board-certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), as well as a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Cordts is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Distinguished Fellow for the Society for Vascular Surgery, and Associate Professor of Surgery at USUHS. Dr. Cordts has authored or co-authored more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as two book chapters.
