Colonel Kara A. Gormont, Chief of Staff for the Defense Health Agency (DHA).

Colonel Kara A. Gormont is the Chief of Staff for the Defense Health Agency (DHA). The Defense Health Agency is a Combat Support Agency with nearly 7,000 staff and a total budget of $2 billion per year. In this role, she serves as the principal advisor to the Director and Deputy Director on all Military Health System matters including fortifying the relationship with Health Affairs, the Joint Staff Surgeon, and the Service medical departments; strengthening the role of the DHA as a Combat Support Agency; and optimizing DHA operations by synchronizing efforts across the Agency.

Gormont entered the Air Force in 1992 after graduating from Auburn University when she received a direct commission as a nurse. She has served in the Air Force for 25 years; with four years (1999 – 2003) in the Inactive Ready Reserves. During that time, she worked at The Ohio State University Medical Center first as the Trauma Surgery Nurse Manager, and later as the Director of International Medicine. While there she completed her Masters in Healthcare Administration, and upon completion returned to Active Duty in 2003 as a Medical Service Corps (MSC) officer. Since returning to active duty, she has served in a variety of leadership positions, and is a two time graduated squadron commander and a graduated group commander.

Gormont served a major role as lead medical planner to establish the Humanitarian Rapid Response Team concept of operations in 2009, and in 2015 was selected as the 633rd Global Response Force Commander where she prepared more than 100 medics to deploy to Honduras. Additionally, she was the lead medical planner in 2010 for the first military contingency to Can Tho Province since the Vietnam War, and in 2011 deployed to Southwest Asia as the Air Force Central Command’s Forward Medical Planner/Administrator.
