TRICARE SelectStarting on January 1, 2018, TRICARE Select replaces TRICARE Standard and Extra. TRICARE Select is a self-managed, preferred provider network plan. TRICARE Select is a fee-for-service option in the United States that allows you to get care from any TRICARE-authorized provider. Enrollment is required to participate. TRICARE Select Enrollment Fees
Congress directed the Department of Defense (DoD) to implement TRICARE Select enrollment fees in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.
Effective Jan. 1, 2021, TRICARE Select Group A retired beneficiaries will be required to pay TRICARE Select enrollment fees. This must be done via allotment, where feasible. Group A consists of sponsors and their family members who first became affiliated with the military through enlistment or appointment before January 1, 2018.
Enrollment fees are waived for Chapter 61 (medical) retirees and their family members and survivors of deceased Active Duty Service Members.
Enrollment Fees for Select Group A retirees:
- Individual $150 yr/ $12.50 mo; Deductible $150; Catastrophic Cap $3,500
- Family $300 yr/ $25 mo; Deductible $300; Catastrophic Cap $3,500
Failure to Pay
Beneficiaries who did not set up a monthly allotment or electronic enrollment fee payment by December 31, 2020 will be disenrolled for failure to pay enrollment fees on January 1, 2021.
Beneficiaries will receive a letter on milConnect notifying them of their disenrollment from TRICARE Select.
If a beneficiary is terminated for failure to pay, the contractor can reinstate their enrollment if the beneficiary requests reinstatement within 180 days of December 31, 2020 (no later than June 30, 2021).
To reinstate coverage, beneficiaries must pay all enrollment fees back to January 1, 2021.
If they don’t take action, beneficiaries will only be able to get care from a military hospital or clinic if space is available (i.e. all civilian healthcare costs will be their full responsibility).
TRICARE Select Group B Retirees
There is no change for TRICARE Select Group B beneficiaries. They currently pay enrollment fees. Group B consists of sponsors and their family members who first became affiliated with the military through enlistment or appointment on or after Jan. 1, 2018.
TRICARE For LifeMedicare-wraparound coverage for TRICARE-eligible beneficiaires who have both Medicare Part A and B.TRICARE For Life
There is no change for TRICARE For Life. They don't currently pay enrollment fees.
