Reintroducing Total Force Fitness

Total Force Fitness graphic showing the concept of the eight domains of Total Force Fitness.

Optimizing Total Force Fitness is the MHS entryway into the first line of effort in the National Defense Strategy – Build a More Lethal Force. The Total Force Fitness concept focuses on a Service Member’s entire health throughout their career, connecting eight dimensions of fitness to optimize health, performance, and readiness holistically. The eight domains of Total Force Fitness are:

  1. Physical Fitness: The ability to physically accomplish all aspects of your tasks while avoiding injury.
  2. Environmental Fitness: The ability to perform your tasks in any operational environment.
  3. Medical and Dental Preventive Care Fitness: The ability to sustain your health and wellness and facilitate restoration to meet medical and dental standards for fitness for duty, return to duty, and medical readiness.
  4. Nutritional Fitness: The ability to sustain your performance through foods and adequate hydration, with good quality and proportions.
  5. Ideological and Spiritual Fitness: The beliefs and practices that strengthen your connectedness with sources of hope, meaning, and purpose.
  6. Psychological Fitness: The ability to integrate and improve cognitive, emotional, and behavioral practices.
  7. Social Fitness: The ability to engage in productive personal and professional relationships, positively interact with unit and command networks, and use resources that promote overall well-being.
  8. Financial Fitness: The combination of attitude, knowledge, and skills to make and exercise money management decisions that best support your life circumstances.

Messages for Communicators:

  • Military readiness requires training, resiliency and overall fitness that maintain performance, build resiliency, prevent injury and illness, and support speedy recovery.
  • Total Force Fitness is a holistic framework for understanding, assessing, and maintaining the capabilities of the Armed Forces to execute the full range of military operations.
  • The achievement and sustainment of fitness and performance of units, organizations, families, and communities of military members through the Total Force Fitness framework is a key enabler of the 2018 National Defense Strategy’s first line of effort – Build a More Lethal Force.
  • Using Total Force Fitness to guide our communication strategy allows the MHS to align our efforts to the organization’s core mission: enabling the medical readiness of combat forces and the readiness of medical forces to support them.
  • Total Force Fitness aims to extend beyond the Service Member to strengthen resilience in families, communities, and organizations, recognizing that these are critical to supporting overall fitness and resilience.
  • The eight Total Force Fitness domains are interconnected and integrated. A deficit in one area can easily cascade and affect other domains, affecting performance and readiness.
