Dr. Wallace

Welcome to the DoD Hearing Center of Excellence Web site, I’m Dr. Wallace.

The Hearing Center of Excellence, or HCE, fosters and promotes the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, rehabilitation, and research of hearing loss and auditory injury. The goal is to reduce the tangible and intangible costs of hearing loss and auditory injuries among U.S. military personnel and Veterans. HCE works with the Department of Veterans Affairs and leads the cooperative effort to meet its goal.

This robust site offers hearing-related content for:

  • Military Members and Veterans
  • Patients and Families
  • Healthcare Providers, and
  • Researchers

The Prevention section presents vital information to help you avoid hearing loss or injury in noisy situations, both on and off duty. To learn about the anatomy of your ear, as well as risk factors and causes of hearing loss, visit the Education portion of the site. Three-dimensional animations display how your ear works and keeps you “balanced.”

Help and Support are available for those living with auditory injury. You can find a provider and learn about VA healthcare and disability benefits. The Resources section provides training resources, a glossary of terms, real patient video stories, FAQs, and links to helpful Web sites. Recent news articles, podcasts, and apps about hearing-related topics are also offered.

Providers can find news about and links to the latest Clinical Practice Guidelines. You can offer your patients and their family members links to valuable information about topics such as:

  • Signs and symptoms of hearing loss
  • Tinnitus
  • Hearing conservation
  • Hearing rehabilitation, and
  • Assistive technology

Providers can also remind their patients that they can access the HCE site from their computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Researchers can learn about research and grant resources, funding information, research policies, and HCE’s collaborative research network.

To receive highlights of what’s new on the HCE Web site and within the organization, you can sign up for our E-mail Update. If you have comments, suggestions, or questions about the Hearing Center of Excellence, it’s easy to contact us.

There’s so much to learn, so click on a topic to get started!
