Health Surveillance Explorer Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting

Q1:

Who can access information on the HSE?

A:

Access to the HSE is available to DOD CAC holders with a need to view or support FHP and operational readiness against disease outbreaks and health threats.

Q2:

How can I get access to the HSE?

A:

First-time users need to authenticate their CAC with the NGA's GEOAxIS service. Once authenticated, users can access the HSE.

Q3:

What content appears on the HSE?

A:

AFHSD senior leaders and epidemiologists determine what disease and health events appear on the HSE on a daily basis. The HSE incorporates data from a variety of AFHSD products to provide timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive health surveillance information, which promotes and enhances the health of the military and its associated populations. In addition, the events can be viewed in proximity to military treatment facilities, U.S. Embassy locations, and the AFHSD Global Emerging Infections Surveillance Branch’s partner network of DOD service laboratories. The HSE includes both active and archived disease outbreaks and other health events, allowing users to analyze historical trends by country, disease, or geographic combatant command.

Q4:

How can users request additional information about an event on the HSE?

A:

For additional information about the events, contact the AFHSD Integrated Biosurveillance Branch ARO Team at dha.ncr.health-surv.list.ib-alert-response@health.mil

Q5:

Which browsers support the HSE?

A:

Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox are the recommended browsers, but ultimately this depends on your organization’s browser settings

Q6:

What if the HSE does not load correctly?

A:

If the HSE does not load correctly (e.g., grey screen, missing tools, etc.), follow these steps:

  • Refresh the page by pressing F5 (Fn+F5 on some Windows computers) or hitting the refresh button at the top of the browser
  • Close and restart the browser
  • Clear your browser cache and temporary files by pressing CTRL+Shift+Delete, then close and restart the browser

If problems persist, contact the AFHSD IB Branch GIS Team at dha.ncr.health-surv.mbx.hse-techsupport@health.mil.

Q7:

How are the health and disease event threat levels for the HSE determined?

A:

Each event is assessed as a LOW, MODERATE, or HIGH public health threat, determined by AFHSD based on the implementation of FHP countermeasures. For a brief explanation of the threat levels, click on the “Legend” widget in the top right corner of the blue header bar on the HSE.

Q8:

Can the content on the HSE be shared?

A:

Some content is CUI//DOD Use Only and should not be shared outside of DOD. If there is information that users wish to disseminate further, contact the AFHSD IB Branch ARO Team at dha.ncr.health-surv.list.ib-alert-response@health.mil.

Q9:

Is the HSE available on SIPRNet?

A:

The HSE is also available in the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, providing cleared users with the ability to view health surveillance data in a secure environment at military bases and approved DOD sites. The SIPR HSE can be accessed here.

Q10:

Why is the HSE hosted by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency?

A:

The NGA delivers world-class geospatial intelligence that provides a decisive advantage to policymakers, military service members, intelligence professionals, and first responders. The NGA is the world leader in timely, relevant, accurate, and actionable geospatial intelligence, enabling the U.S. intelligence community and the DOD to fulfill the President's national security priorities to protect the nation.
