The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch (AFHSB) is the central epidemiologic resource for the U.S. Armed Forces, conducting medical surveillance to protect those who serve our nation in uniform and allies who are critical to our national security interests. AFHSB provides timely, relevant, actionable and comprehensive health surveillance information to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations.

  • Develop, refine, and improve standardized health surveillance methods

Medical Surveillance Monthly Report MSMR Online SubscriptionThe Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR) is AFHSB's flagship publication. The monthly peer-reviewed journal provides evidence-based estimates of the incidence, distribution, impact, and trends of health-related conditions among service members. Additionally, the MSMR focuses one issue per year on the absolute and relative morbidity burden attributable to various illnesses and injuries among service members and beneficiaries.

The Health Surveillance Explorer (HSE) is a dynamic CAC-enabled mapping application that allows the Geo­graphic Combatant Commands (GCCs) to identify global health threats and disease outbreaks in near-real time. It provides timely, relevant and actionable health surveillance information to military leaders around the globe. The HSE makes it more efficient and effective to assemble surveillance data.

Proposal Management Information System

Launch Proposal Management Information SystemThe Proposal Management Information System (ProMIS) program is a web-based application used to facilitate program management at the AFHSB's Global Emerging Infections Surveillance (GEIS) section. Investigators in the GEIS partner network submit proposals for funding consideration and GEIS operations staff monitors the progress of those projects.

DMED ButtonThe Defense Medical Epidemiology Database (DMED) provides worldwide access to de-identified data contained in the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS). Through this user-friendly interface, authorized users can create customized queries of disease and injury rates in active duty populations.

2019-nCoV Surveillance Summary #4

From mid-DEC 2019 to 13 FEB 2020, 59,822 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including1,367 deaths (case fatality proportion 2.3%), have been reported in mainland China. On 12 FEB, the Chinese government reported asubstantial increase in cases (+15,074) and deaths (+253). This is due to an expanded case definition (applicable only in Hubei Province) that includes clinically-diagnosed cases in addition to individuals testing positive via PCR. Additionally, 525 confirmed cases have been reported in 27 countries and regions outside of mainland China, including USINDOPACOM (15), USEUCOM (9), USNORTHCOM 2), and USCENTCOM (1).

From mid-DEC to 6 FEB, 28,085 confirmed cases of infection with a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), including 565 deaths (case fatality proportion 2.0%) have been reported in mainland China. Additionally, 259 confirmed cases have been reported in 27 countries and regions outside of mainland China, including 15 countries/regions in USINDOPACOM, nine in USEUCOM, two in USNORTHCOM, and one in USCENTCOM.

From mid-DEC to 24 JAN, Chinese health officials have reported 830 cases of infection (25 deaths, case fatality proportion 3%) with a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)in mainland China (29 provinces), with the majority (56%) of cases reported from the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province, the presumed epicenter of the outbreak.

Armed Forces Reportable Medical Events Guidelines and Case Definitions

A reportable event may represent an inherent, significant threat to public health and military operation. These events have the potential to affect large numbers of people, to be widely transmitted within a population, to have severe/life threatening clinical manifestations, and to disrupt military training and deployment. Timely, accurate reporting of probable, suspected or confirmed cases ensures proper identification, treatment, control, and follow-up of cases.

Outbreak of Cyclosporiasis in a U.S. Air Force Training Population, Joint Base San Antonio–Lackland, TX, 2018 While bacteria and viruses are the usual causes of gastrointestinal disease outbreaks, 2 Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)– Lackland, TX, training populations experienced an outbreak of diarrheal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis in June and July 2018. Cases were identified from outpatient medical records and responses to patient questionnaires.

Norovirus Outbreak in Army Service Members, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, May 2018 In May 2018, an outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses due to norovirus occurred at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The outbreak lasted 14 days, and a total of 91 cases, of which 8 were laboratory confirmed and 83 were suspected, were identified.

During 2013–2018, 8,744 active component women of childbearing potential were diagnosed with infertility for the first time, resulting in an overall incidence of 79.3 cases per 10,000 person-years (p-yrs).
