Medical Student Rotation Information

As a teaching hospital, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (NHCP) is committed to the education of future military health care professionals, including medical students. NHCP hosts medical student rotations for 3rd and 4th year USUHS and HPSP medical students in Family Medicine, providing both outpatient, inpatient, and obstetrical training for medical students seeking to gain experience in a family medicine environment serving a diverse population of active duty servicemembers, dependents, and military retirees. NHCP also hosts 4th year USUHS and HPSP medical students seeking an elective rotation in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Experiences include dedicated time with Sports Medicine faculty and fellows in the areas of Sports Medicine Clinic, hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound training, and orthobiologic techniques.

Medical Student Rotation Request Process

1. Students should send an email to usn.pendleton.nmrtc-cpendleton.list.gme-office@health.mil to request an application.
2. Once complete, students should email the completed application to the GME Office at usn.pendleton.nmrtc-cpendleton.list.gme-office@health.mil.
3. Students will receive a reply within 48 – 72 business hours to discuss scheduling options.

Potential Rotation Sites

Family Medicine

3rd year USUHS Student Rotation (5 weeks)

• 1-week inpatient medicine
• 3 OB shifts
• 1-2 Sports Medicine clinic days
• 1-2 First Trimester Obstetrical Ultrasound clinic days
• 1-2 Procedure days (vasectomy, colposcopy, minor skin procedure, joint injection)
• 12 Family Medicine Clinic Days

4th year HPSP/USUHS Student Rotation (4 weeks)

• 1-week inpatient medicine
• 2 OB shifts
• 1-2 Sports Medicine clinic days
• 1-2 First Trimester Obstetrical Ultrasound clinic days
• 1-2 Procedure days (vasectomy, colposcopy, minor skin procedure, joint injection)
• 8 Family Medicine Clinic days
