Local Area Information

Fort Cavazos, Texas, is adjacent to Killeen, Texas, in Bell County, and is located in Texas Hill Country, an area noted for its rugged hills, spring-fed rivers, forested canyons, and caverns that allow for hiking, biking, and canoeing. Texas Hill Country boasts a fusion of Spanish, Mexican, German, and Czech cultures in food, music, and architecture, and is home to the Texas wine industry.

Many residents and fellows live in Killeen, Harker Heights, Belton, Salado, or Temple.

Temple, Texas, is the largest city within Bell County, is home to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center (including Memorial Hospital and McLanes Children's Hospital) and has the highest number of physicians per capita of any city in the United States.

Texas Hill Country includes:

  • Fort Hood’s Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA): Home | Fort Cavazos | U.S. Army MWR
  • Nearby cities known for food, arts, and cultural events (Temple, Salado, Georgetown, Round Rock, and more)
  • Waco (60 miles away) - Division I sports, zoo, antique and rustic shopping, children’s and historical museums, concert and theatre venues
  • Austin (60 miles away) - Division I sports, concert and theatre venues, national festivals, children’s and historical museums, shopping, world-class restaurants and food trucks

San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston are all a short drive (2-3 hours) away as well and while stationed here do not require you to be on leave in order to visit.
