Program Description
The Clinical Informatics Fellowship at Madigan Army Medical Center is the only Clinical Informatics Fellowship in the Department of Defense. Our graduates enter senior-leadership positions withing the Defense Health Agency and the Services.
Mission, Vision and Aims
Mission
Prepare fellows as leaders in Clinical Informatics for positions as Chief Medical Information Officers at large military treatment facilities, at the Network level, as Clinical Informaticists working at the Enterprise level, as Clinical Informaticists enhancing the readiness mission, or as Clinical Informaticists deployed in the operational environment enhancing theater-based care, patient movement, and ongoing care post-evacuation/deployment.
Vision
To train fellows with the skills necessary to help leaders transform data into knowledge.
Aims
- Provide fellows with tools and skills to improve medical care throughout the enterprise.
- Train fellows to help DHA and Services in the mission of a Medically Ready Force and a Ready Medical Force.
- Give fellows leadership training so they can set the leadership standard across the Enterprise.
Curriculum and Schedules
Didactics are twice a week; class schedule depends on master’s program schedule.

Applicant Information, Rotation and Interview Opportunities
Please contact the Program Coordinator via email dha.jblm.madigan-amc.list.mamc-fammed-clininfo@health.mil or via telephone 253-968-3299, to set up an elective rotation as a medical student or resident.
Scoring of interviewees is based on prior medical school and residency grades/evaluations as well as any prior military assignments. Research publications are also taken into consideration as well.
Specialty Board Examination Information
Program graduates take the American Board of Preventive Medicine or American Board of Pathology Clinical Informatics Board Examination. This exam is offered annually. To become fully board certified, applicants are eligible to take board certification exam immediately after graduation. Fellows have the opportunity to work directly with faculty and program director on projects.
Well-Being
Active duty military fellows have access to all the programs currently available to active-duty military. This includes free gym access, on-base childcare, and schooling. There is also a large morale, welfare and readiness program that includes rental of lake-front cabins on base as well as other outdoor activity equipment rental. Joint Base Lewis-McChord is located near Seattle, Washington and there are several state parks near the post that provide beautiful opportunities to get into nature.
