About Us

Welcome to the "First and Finest," Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia! NMCP is geographically located in the southeast corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater Area. Hampton Roads (including the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News) boasts one of the largest military concentrations in the country—and not just the Navy. In addition to serving as homeport for nearly a fourth of our naval forces, Hampton Roads is home to the Army installations Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, and Fort Story, as well as Langley Air Force Base. Hampton Roads is also home to NATO’s headquarters in the United States. As an innovative military treatment facility, NMCP is a primary referral center for MTFs on the east coast and in Europe. State-of-the-art high-quality care is provided to beneficiaries across a robust spectrum of medical, surgical, and dental specialties. The facility provides a full range of psychiatric services to include specialists in children, addiction, and adult psychiatry. Additionally, NMCP has a Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program. NMCP also offers a full range of public health services to our beneficiaries and Department of Defense workforce, in addition to robust public health support to the Fleet and local Navy installations.

Collaborating with regional partners, staff clinicians work in high-volume and acuity military and civilian facilities, enriching their knowledge, skills, and abilities. NMCP is a premier training platform, supporting 13 graduate medical education residencies, many of which are nationally recognized through their contributions to research and medical literature. Additional nursing, technician, and corpsmen training programs and the establishment of the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command further strengthen NMCP’s impact toward generating a ready medical force. The FIRST and FINEST is a readiness platform to optimize critical skill sustainment, combat readiness, and survivability for the Fleet.

NMCP has a long tradition of research and maintains the two regional Institutional Review Boards for active research for 25 military commands on the eastern seaboard. The research department has over 240 active research protocols and over 275 publications in recent years.

NMCP is located in the largest fleet concentration in the world, with over 100,000 beneficiaries enrolled for care and over 370,000 eligible beneficiaries in the region.

The hospital is the oldest Navy continually operating hospital, established in 1830. History is everywhere as you explore the command and surrounding area. The hospital continues to be on the forefront of miliary training, health care, and outreach to our community. NMCP is the only Level II trauma center in the Military Health System, ensuring we provide lifesaving care to our community while preparing our staff for service around the globe. In addition, Project Caladrius provides fixed-wing medical transport to bring high-complexity patients to NMCP from around the region.
