Capt. (Dr.) Nancy L. Miller

U.S. Navy Capt. (Dr.) Nancy L. Miller serves as the Director for Professional Education and Designated Institutional Official of Naval Medical Center San Diego, overseeing the training of 350 U.S. military officers in 22 Graduate Medical Education programs. As a practicing physician, Capt. Miller holds dual board certification in internal medicine and nephrology. She is also a clinical associate professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.

A native of Fairfield, Idaho, Capt. Miller earned a bachelor of science from the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho and a medical degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Capt. Miller completed her internal medicine residency training at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California, and her nephrology fellowship training at the University of California San Diego. Additionally, she completed studies at the UCSD Healthcare Leadership Academy and the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Quality and Safety Leadership Academy.

Capt. Miller's Navy leadership experience includes: Internal Medicine Division Head and Japanese National Internship Program IM Coordinator, United States Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan; Department Head, Expeditionary Medical Facility Djibouti, Africa; Associate IM Clerkship Director, USUHS; IM Associate Program Director, NMCSD; Internal Medicine Department Vice-Chair, NMCSD; Medical Executive Committee Chair, NMCSD; Assistant Director for Medical Operations and Planning, Pacific Partnership 2018 (United States Naval Ship MERCY); Navy Nephrology Specialty Leader; Senior Medical Officer/Director for Medical Operations and Planning, Pacific Partnership 2021 (USNS CITY OF BISMARCK); Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at NMCSD.

Capt. Miller’s awards include five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Her academic awards include NMCSD Master Clinician, Patricia V. Pepper Outstanding Female Leadership Award, and the James J. Leonard Award for Excellence in Teaching Internal Medicine.

Capt. Miller is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology. She is the current Governor for the Unites States Navy Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
