Mission

The mission of this program is to develop capable and successful Otolaryngologists who are well-suited to military needs. Training will develop core values and abilities necessary for a successful career in Otolaryngology. Our goal is for our graduates to provide the highest level of patient care in any environment, as well as to inspire lifelong development and growth.

Aims

1. We produce board certified, comprehensive otolaryngologists to care for the war-fighting force.
2. We seek innovation through research and quality improvement related to military otolaryngology.
3. We develop leaders in the military and the otolaryngology community.

Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residents participate in all scheduled didactic activities while on rotations, to include weekly academic conferences, lectures, journal clubs, and M&M conferences.

There are no elective rotations within the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery residency training program.

Tripler residents will be expected to take one week of call per month and work at least one weekend day per weekend. The expectations are to be outlined by the Attending and will be primarily home call while at Tripler. The call should be consistent with the prescribed duty hours and any potential fatigue issues are to be addressed by the Attending Faculty, CR, and PD/APD. There will be no TAMC call responsibilities while at Atrium.

Didactic meetings cover a range of educational topics such as simulation exercises, military unique topics, patient safety, medical ethics, and professional development.

• Basic Course in Allergy through the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy

TAMC has a simulation center which can be used by Residents to learn suturing, trauma management and to advance their medical and surgical skills.

The TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residency program has built-in didactics to further each resident’s leadership abilities and practice supervision as a senior-level resident. The Chief Residents have a shared leadership position over the resident team.

The TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residency program has a formal research requirement. Research rotations are provided in 4-week blocks with a total of three blocks from PGY-2 through PGY-4. Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses and retrospective and prospective studies are all potential projects.

The program requires each resident to perform an unofficial quality improvement/program improvement project. An overview of the topic and project needs to be presented to the program by the completion of residency.

Medical students are encouraged to rotate with us. Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences 3rd year medical students may rotate with us as part of their elective option during their surgery clerkship. Sub-intern and elective rotations are available for 4th year medical students. If you are interviewing, please join us between June and September. Please email us six months prior to your anticipated rotation to allow for us to coordinate with you.

Applicants should reach out to the TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residency Program regarding scheduling their interview. Rotations are offered to 4th year medical students who are interested our program and are coordinated through TAMC's Graduate Medical Education Office.

TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residents must take their USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 during the intern year. In preparation for the board exam, residents will take the annual In-service examination and biannual simulated oral board examination. After graduation, residents are eligible and expected to achieve primary certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residents will have opportunities to teach medical students who are rotating at TAMC throughout the year.

TAMC Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residents will have multiple opportunities to teach other rotating Family Medicine, OMFS, and Transitional Year residents in clinic and in the operating room.

The TAMC Otolaryngology faculty is a carefully assembled and dedicated group. It currently consists of eight full time Army Otolaryngologists and one civilian Otolaryngologist. All faculty have subspecialty training in one of the following areas - Head & Neck Surgical Oncology, Neurotology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Otolaryngic Allergy, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Laryngology, Rhinology, and Sleep Medicine & Sleep Surgery.

There is a mentorship program which allows for development of a mentoring relationship between faculty and residents that provides professional and military guidance throughout the academic and military careers of the resident.

To support resident wellness and team building, we set aside protected time for an annual resident retreat, in addition to a monthly resident lunch. We also participate in weekly group PT activities to include ultimate Frisbee, soccer, etc.
