Program Description

The Tripler Army Medical Center Pediatrics Residency was initially accredited in 1957, before Hawaii even became a state! Hundreds of pediatricians have trained at Tripler and find themselves as leaders in military and civilian pediatrics today. Tripler is the referral center for military families in Guam, Japan, and Korea, and has Global Health Engagement Opportunities via partnerships throughout the Pacific. The opportunity to evaluate and care for children with unusual tropical diseases and a close affiliation with an excellent children’s hospital provide for a challenging, comprehensive pediatric training program.

Mission, Vision and Aims

Mission

Equip and train progression, military-relevant pediatricians in order to continue leading military medicine in clinical care, patient advocacy, global health and medical readiness while developing faculty members to be leaders in military and civilian pediatrics.

Vision

Tripler Pediatrics Residency’s vision is to train professional pediatricians and Army officers who are well suited to provide exceptional care as general pediatricians, general medical officers, or pediatric subspecialists to support the needs of the U.S. Army.

Aims

  • Train Army pediatric officers who are resilient, professional, and competent.
  • Provide the best possible pediatric care across inpatient, outpatient and remote delivery settings.
  • Develop lifelong learning to improve clinical practice.
  • Promote interest in scholarly activity and quality improvement.

Curriculum and Schedules

  • Daily morning report.
  • Morning lecture series based on the American Board of Pediatrics Board Exam Content Specifications and including faculty development, M&M, and simulation training.
  • Daily noon conference highlighting mock codes, military unique curriculum, board review, and time for PI/QI work.

All rotations are at TAMC with the exception of one required rotation at Kapiolani annually.

1-3 days per month, Friday nights or weekend daytime

  • At Tripler, residents have the unique opportunity to participate in AIREVAC transfers to the mainland.
  • Noon conference military unique curriculum featuring staff deployment experiences, practical applications such as reading your leave and earnings statement and Army regulations.
  • Graduating residents complete a capstone T3 refresher course.

Residents must maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Residents become PALS and NRP instructors during residency and complete the Military Medical Humanitarian Assistance Course during their Transition to Practice month.

Residents participate in department faculty development during AM didactics and have the opportunity to attend USUHS faculty development classes. There are opportunities for residents to take leadership positions within the residency as well as in hospital GME.

Scholarly and Professional Development Opportunities

Our residents participate in a variety of research opportunities, from case reports to original research requiring IRB approval. Residents can take a research elective to help develop their projects. Our residents have been accepted at national conferences such as AAP and PAS, and the department will fund TDY to present research.

Residents are required to participate in a Quality Improvement (QI)/Process Improvement (PI) project to fulfill the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) requirements for graduation. Residents have presented their QI projects in national meetings.

Residents participate in department faculty development during morning didactics and have the opportunity to attend USUHS faculty development classes.

Applicant Information, Rotation and Interview Opportunities

Fourth year medical Student rotations are offered in our Subspecialty or Gen Peds Clinics as well as our Level 3 NICU, PICU, Pediatric Ward, or Newborn Nursery.

Residents are required to participate in a Quality Improvement (QI)/Process Improvement (PI) project to fulfill the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) requirements for graduation. Residents have presented their QI projects in national meetings.

Residents participate in department faculty development during morning didactics and have the opportunity to attend USUHS faculty development classes.

Teaching Opportunities

  • Tripler pediatric residents are a vital and integral part of providing education to USUHS medical students while seeing patients together in the clinic or inpatient setting. Residents can volunteer to provide weekly didactic lectures to help medical students prepare for their shelf exams.
  • The program holds an annual half day retreat for rising senior residents to provide guidance and formal education.
  • Third year residents precept interns twice per week while on Primary Care Medical Home rotation

Upper-level residents become PALS and NRP instructors.

Faculty and Mentorship

We have a diverse faculty of general pediatricians and subspecialists with a wealth of operational, deployment, humanitarian and pediatrics experience.

All residents select or are assigned a mentor, which can change throughout residency if career goals change. Residents and mentors meet quarterly to go over rotation evaluation, career goals, research, quality improvement, and any further concerns.

Well-Being

  • Annual 3-day retreat for all residents throughout Hawaii (Big Island, Maui, Kauai)

  • Monthly resident PT, including water polo, pickleball, ultimate frisbee
  • Monthly pediatric morale events including annual beach BBQ, chili cookoff, Halloween costume competition, Movember mustache competition
