Military Health System

Organization

From an ASBP Enterprise view, our program in connection with Military Health Affairs, Defense Health Agency (DHA), Office of the Joint Staff Surgeon (OJSS), Service Blood Programs and Combatant Commands (CCMD) operates under common goals, metrics, procedures and work together to shape the future.

Division and Components

As a joint operation, the ASBP requires coordination among the blood programs of the military Services (Army, Navy, Air Force) and unified commands. The program relies upon many components working together to provide quality blood products to service members, their families, retirees, and veterans. The following organizations and offices are integral components of the ASBP:

  • Armed Services Blood Program Division
  • Service Blood Program Offices (SBPOs)
  • Blood Donor Centers (BDCs)
  • Armed Services Whole Blood Processing Laboratories (ASWBPLs)
  • Joint Blood Program Office (JBPO)
  • Area Joint Blood Program Office (AJBPO)
  • Expeditionary Blood Transshipment System (EBTS)
  • Blood Product Depots (BPDs)
  • Medical Detachment Blood Support (MDBSs)
  • Transfusion Service Facilities (TSFs)

The Armed Services Blood Program Division manages the blood program for the Department of Defense (DOD). The division is subject to the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) (OASD(HA)) and under the operational control of the DHA.
