Contraceptive Options and TRICARE Coverage
Male contraceptive options include:
- Condoms. Condoms are available over the counter. While condoms aren’t covered by TRICARE, they may be available at some walk-in contraceptive clinics. Check with your military hospital or clinic to learn more.
- Vasectomies. TRICARE covers vasectomies. Depending on your TRICARE health plan, you may have a copayment or cost-share. Vasectomy reversals are covered if medically necessary due to a disease or injury.
- Spermicide. Spermicides containing nonoxynol-9 are available over the counter and, like condoms, are not covered by Tricare. Nonoxynol-9 can cause irritation and may increase the risk of contracting HIV.
Walk-In Contraceptive Services
All beneficiaries, regardless of gender identity, are eligible for care and counseling at walk-in contraceptive clinics. At a walk-in contraceptive clinic, you can get:
- Education on safe sexual practices
- Contraceptives
- Education on Sexually Transmitted Infection prevention
- STI treatment
Vasectomy Procedures at Military Hospitals or Clinics
More than 100 military hospitals and clinics offer vasectomies. Typically, vasectomies are performed in:
- Family Medicine clinics
- Urology clinics
- General Surgery clinics
Check with your local military hospital or clinic for your options.
