AMSUS recognizes Belvoir Hospital providers

During the event, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Heather Shattuck was recognized as Nurse of the Year by the organization. This is the third year in a row that the honor has gone to a Belvoir Hospital nurse. FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States recently recognized Fort Belvoir Community Hospital with their 2016 Improved Access Award for drastically reducing wait times in the Outpatient Pharmacy.

The reduction is the direct result of a recent Lean Six Sigma black belt project saw wait times fall to just ten minutes for active-duty personnel, and 16 minutes for dependents and other patients, said Army Capt. Diana Chung, deputy chief of Inpatient Pharmacy. 

“Not only the result of the project was successful, but the pharmacy formed the framework of the best practice options, which lend itself to standardization,” said Chung. 

The project involved implementing many changes such as centralized prescription label printing, a separate process loop for patients who present hard copy prescription, immediate processing of patients with two or less non-complex medications and increased use of automated prescription filling.

Other process improvements include the pre-packing of medications to omit steps in the process wherever possible, a standardized drug inventory layout for easy location of medications and a program to track provider prescription ordering errors, said Chung.

“Wait times have the direct correlation to the patient's satisfaction- the less time the patients wait, the more satisfied they are and less tension between the patients and the pharmacy staff it creates. Pharmacy staffs are generally empathetic and compassionate people. We want to provide the best quality and expedited services to our patient when possible. This project has made it possible to do so,” said Chung. 

“This is a huge win for [hospital] leadership and staff members! I would like to thank FBCH outpatient pharmacy staff for their effort. Leadership is one thing, but followership is another thing that made this project successful,” she added. 

At the banquet, held Dec. 1, the academy also recognized Navy Lt. Cmdr. Heather Shattuck as Nurse of the Year. Shattuck was announced as the awardee while serving as a clinical nurse specialist in the Emergency Medicine Department here, but has since transferred to a clinic in Sigonella, Italy. This is the third year in a row that the honor has gone to a Belvoir Hospital nurse.
