Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, director, Defense Health Agency, was awarded with a Federal Health IT Leadership Award by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) November 27. The award is presented annually to federal leaders who made significant contributions to advancing healthcare through the use of health IT.

As the primary provider of health IT services for all military health, the Defense Health Agency ensures military treatment facilities have the infrastructure and IT expertise necessary to both successfully deploy and maintain its core electronic health record and all other health IT programs and initiatives. The Defense Health Agency also serves as the principal liaison and representative for the clinical community, ensuring clinicians and other medical providers have a direct line of communication with MHS GENESIS implementers and senior decision makers.

MHS GENESIS has been successfully deployed at four initial sites in the Pacific Northwest and is scheduled for full deployment by 2022 across the entire Military Health System. MHS GENESIS will streamline and connect the health records of each service member, veteran, and their families while updating existing technology to modernize workflows and clinical processes for all military health providers.

“I am proud to accept this award from HIMSS, but only on behalf of the entire organization,” said Bono. “We have tens of thousands of providers, support staff and health IT professionals who work together every day – from forward-deployed locations to ships to stateside locations – ensuring that our global health system is focused on delivering the finest care to our people wherever they may be in need of our care. I’m honored to represent them today.”
