The Program Executive Office Defense Healthcare Management Systems celebrated National Health IT Week earlier this month. The annual week-long celebration, held October 8-12 this year, offers all healthcare stakeholders an opportunity to unite and raise awareness about the benefit of health IT to health care in the United States. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Catalyzing Change.” The theme highlighted value in four key areas: supporting healthcare transformation, expanding access to high quality healthcare, increasing economic opportunity, and making communities healthier.

Throughout the week, leaders and staff from the PEO DHMS shared their stories about why health IT is important and how they use health IT to fulfill the program’s mission. Under this mission, the office is responsible for the Department of Defense electronic health record modernization, including the operational, data exchange, and interoperability initiatives. These solutions improve clinical decision making and health data interoperability between the DoD, Department of Veterans Affairs, and private sector partners. Through collaboration with peers, PEO DHMS will drive the global exchange of health information.

Stacy Cummings, PEO DHMS program executive officer, explains how the program and its management offices are intricately linked with health IT.

“We are deploying a modern electronic health record that will enable us to transform the delivery of healthcare and advance data sharing to service members, veterans, and their families,” said Cummings. “In addition to all the great work we are doing with the Military Health System, we are catalyzing change across the federal government by partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and focusing on commercial interoperability by sharing data through exchanges with our commercial partners. Through these efforts, we are leveraging health IT, commercial off-the-shelf tools, and modernized and advanced data sharing techniques.”
