The federal government is currently experiencing an emergency shutdown furlough which may affect up to 850,000 federal employees and disrupt some services across the Military Health System.

  • For information about the TRICARE health plan and getting care during the shutdown furlough, visit www.tricare.mil/shutdown.
  • Federal employees can visit the Office of Personnel Management's guidance during the shutdown furlough.
  • Active duty military service personnel are not affected by the shutdown furlough and should report to work as usual. Visit Defense.gov for further guidance. 

TRICARE Changes and You

The Military Health System (MHS) is modernizing to better serve you and respond to changes in law and policy. Over the coming months and years, you will see some significant changes to the TRICARE health plan. Most provisions went into effect on January 1, 2018, with full implementation occurring on January 1, 2019.

  • February 1, 2018: Pharmacy copayments will change.
  • December 31, 2018: TRICARE Retiree Dental Program will end.

Interim Final Rule: Establishment of TRICARE Select and Other TRICARE Reforms

This interim final rule implements the primary features of section 701 and partially implements several other sections of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 (NDAA-17). The law makes significant changes to the TRICARE program, especially to the health maintenance organization (HMO)-like health plan, known as TRICARE Prime; to the preferred provider organization (PPO) health plan, previously called TRICARE Extra which is to be replaced.
