TRICARE Changes and You

The Military Health System (MHS) is modernizing to better serve you and respond to changes in law and policy. Over the coming months and years, you will see some significant changes to the TRICARE health plan. Most provisions went into effect on January 1, 2018, with full implementation occurring on January 1, 2019.

  • February 1, 2018: Pharmacy copayments will change.
  • December 31, 2018: TRICARE Retiree Dental Program will end.
  • January 1, 2019: You can start enrolling in the Federal Dental and Vision Program, if eligible.

On Jan. 1, 2018, the current three U.S. TRICARE regions consolidate into two. New regional contractors will administer the TRICARE benefit for the East (Humana Military) and West (Health Net Federal Services, LLC) Regions. Due to these changes, it’s possible that your primary care manager (PCM) will no longer be in network.

Take Command of Your Health: Milestone changes coming to TRICARE

The Defense Health Agency recently met a key requirement for implementing these changes, with the publication of a formal document – called an Interim Final Rule – that establishes the legal “rules of the road” for putting in place changes mandated by Congress. “We are working hard to use the opportunity Congress gave us to continue building a health plan that does even better for our beneficiaries, the warfighter, and the taxpayers who support us,” said Vice Adm.
