Vestibular Home Exercises

The vestibular home exercise videos were developed by the Military Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation Core Faculty Committee to be used as a reference tool to assist patients to perform an individualized program as guided by a referring medical provider.

These videos are intended to demonstrate common vestibular exercises and/or canalith repositioning maneuvers to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

These videos are not intended to replace medical advice given by your provider but simply to illustrate the exercises or treatment maneuvers that have been prescribed to you.

Introduction Video:

Visual Exercises:

Training Saccades:  Saccade training is used to train both eyes to move together in a coordinated manner between two targets. Training Sacades Video

Training Vergence:  Vergence training is used to train the eyes to move between near and far targets. Training Vergence (Pencil Push-up) Video

Vestibular Exercises:

Vestibular Ocular Reflex:  The x 1 viewing  (pronounced “times one viewing”) exercise is used to treat impairments of the vestibular ocular reflex.        VOR x 1 Training Video

Balance Exercises:   Balance training is used to improve postural stability. Balance Exercise Video

Vestibular Habituation:    Habituation training is used to decrease the intensity of symptoms when exposed to specific stimuli. Vestibular Habituation Video

Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers (to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)):

The following videos provide instructions for performing maneuvers that each treat a specific type of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. These maneuvers should be performed only after an evaluation by a medical provider who will determine the involved side (right or left), involved canal (posterior or horizontal canal), and the maneuver most appropriate for treating your diagnosis.

Posterior Canal BPPV:  The most common type of BPPV (posterior canal canalithiasis) can be treated with a modified Epley maneuver:

Right Posterior CanalSelf Canalith Rep Right Side Video

Left Posterior CanalSelf Canalith Rep Left Side Video

Horizontal Canal BPPV:  Horizontal canal canalithiasis can be treated using the Gufoni maneuver:

Right Horizontal CanalSelf Can Rep Right Horizontal Video

Left Horizontal CanalSelf Can Rep Left Horizontal Video
