Medical Readiness Command, West held its Best Leader, Best Squad competition May 13-17. This year, MRC - W teamed up with the Medical Center of Excellence to hold the first consolidated competition where the participants could also earn their Expert Field Medical Badge and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge.

When World War II began, Japanese Americans like James Kazuo Okubo weren't allowed to join the fight because of fears that were stoked by the Pearl Harbor attacks. When that finally changed, Okubo enlisted in the Army to prove his meddle as a medic. He was part of one of the most storied regiments in U.S. history and years after his death, received the Medal of Honor for his heroics.

Seven sailors died, and 48 others were injured when the guided a missile frigate and the aircraft carrier collided while performing nighttime exercises on Nov. 22, 1975. For years, the traumatic experience of that collision scarred many sailors who escaped physical injury but carried the invisible weight of the tragedy.
