Definition:

The diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury also known as concussion is made when two conditions are met. In the absence of documentation, both conditions are based on self-report information. An injury event must have occurred. The individual must have experienced a normal structural neuroimaging by head CT or conventional brain MRI and one of the following:

  • Alteration of consciousness lasting less than 24 hours.
  • Loss of consciousness, if any, lasting for less than 30 minutes.
  • Memory loss after the event, called post-traumatic amnesia, for events immediately surrounding the injury that lasts for less than 24 hours.
