Definition:

Standardized coding system comprising Levels I and II. Level I HCPCS codes are current procedural terminology (CPT) codes that are used primarily to identify medical services and procedures furnished by physicians and other health care professionals and maintained by the American Medical Association. Level II HCPCS are used primarily to identify products, supplies, and services not included in the CPT codes, such as ambulance services and durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies when used outside a provider’s office. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services maintains Level II codes.
