A formal civilian organization that, within a designated area, coordinates activities related to the recovery of organs, eyes, and tissues for a specific type of transplantation. OPOs evaluate potential donors, discuss donation with surviving family members, arrange for the surgical removal and transplantation of donated organs, and educate the public about the need for organ and tissue donation.
