Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician Clinical Training Program allows students to further refine their skills in military or civilian medical treatment facilities.

Pharmacy technicians specifically focus on the safe preparation, dispensing, and management of medications by:

  • Receiving, reviewing, and processing prescriptions and medication orders for accuracy and completeness
  • Preparing, labeling, and dispensing medications in outpatient and inpatient pharmacy settings
  • Performing basic pharmaceutical calculations
  • Compounding non-sterile preparations
  • Preparing sterile products and intravenous admixtures using aseptic technique
  • Utilizing proper safety precautions when handling hazardous drugs and controlled substances
  • Assisting with pharmacy operations including:
    • Administration and supply
    • Inventory receipt, storage, and rotation
    • Controlled substance accountability and documentation
    • Expiration date and recall monitoring
    • Automated dispensing and pharmacy information systems
  • Applying therapeutic and anatomy and physiology knowledge to support patient medication needs
  • Supporting patient counseling and refill processes conducted by the pharmacist
  • Applying quality assurance procedures throughout pharmacy practice
