Program Description

The bedrock of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program is in training clinically excellent emergency physicians. This is the core of our focus because that is what our trainees, and more importantly, our patients deserve. Clinical excellence is achieved through varied clinical training sites, high-volume patient exposure, resident ownership and agency in patient care, and a commitment to coaching residents to meet the highest expectations of clinical competence.

Our program is unique in that it combines multiple training environments, including county, academic, and community emergency medicine sites. Our two main clinical sites, Denver Health Medical Center, an urban level-one trauma center and safety-net county hospital, and the University of Colorado Hospital, a tertiary/quaternary academic referral center and level-one trauma center, provide the opportunity for our residents to care for the full breadth of emergency medicine.

Military Affiliation Highlights

In partnership with the Air Force, the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine (DHREM) offers 1-2 active-duty spots per year. The clinical curriculum at DHREM offers extensive exposure to high-acuity emergency department patients, critical care and trauma. The Chair of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is a colonel in the Air Force and the founding director of the University of Colorado Center for Combat Medicine and Battlefield Research. The COMBAT Center facilitates the execution of combat and deployment-related medical research by navigating successful relationships with:

  • Military scientists
  • Clinical investigators
  • Military leaders
  • Industry

This produces

  • Successful innovations
  • Material solutions
  • High impact knowledge products

We recognize the importance of education and mentorship in advancing the next generation of military physicians and researchers. We recruit, train, and mentor physicians and researchers across the pipeline from students in our COMBAT Research scholar program from active duty residents and fellows to established investigators and mentors.
