DHA Graduate Medical Education Application Information

The Defense Health Agency Graduate Medical Education oversees residency and fellowship programs from three Service branches: Army, Navy and Air Force. DHA GME program military applicants compete for positions via the Joint Graduate Medical Education Selection Board, which is commonly referred to as a the “military match”. Annually on/about 1 July, each Service releases a document that describes the application process in detail. Military applicants should receive this document through typical military announcements; an additional copy may be obtained from the service member’s personnel office or the Service GME office.

A limited number of programs have civilian positions funded by the Veterans Administration, and these positions are competed in the National Residency Match Programgoes to the VA website. Eligible applicants may apply through the NRMP. If a DHA GME program is not listed in the NRMP, then civilian applicants are not eligible to apply.

Eligibility

A

There are two populations that are eligible to train in DHA GME programs:

  1. Affiliated with a U.S. Uniformed Service:
    a. Current Medical Corps officer authorized to apply by their Service
    b. Enrolled in the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine, Health Professions Scholarship Program, or Health Services Collegiate Program
  2. Civilian applicant to one of the few programs that have VA funded position(s) (see Q2, Q3, and Q4 below)

Regardless of the population, applicants must have:

  1. Graduated from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education; or
  2. Graduated from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association; or,
  3. Graduated from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meet one of the following additional qualifications:
    a. Hold a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or,
    b. Hold a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current  Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education specialty-/subspecialty program

A few programs accept civilian applicants for Veterans Administration funded positions. These programs may be found on the National Residency Matching Program website. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet the requirements of the VA and NRMP. Please note if the program is not found in the NRMP, that means civilian applicants may NOT apply.

No. All applicants must be U.S. citizens.

ECFMG applicants may apply to those programs that accept civilian applicants for VA funded positions, subject to the requirements of the VA and NRMP.

The Army, Navy and Air Force each offer residency and fellowship physician training programs. Coast Guard and Public Health Service applicants may compete for military positions on a space-available basis.

The DHA sponsors directly, or in partnership with civilian institutions, more than 200 programs.

A

DHA programs, including those affiliated with civilian institutions, have approximately 3,300 residents/fellows in training.

Service and Service Obligation

A

For Military trainees, training in DHA GME programs incurs a service obligation that is served either concurrently or consecutively with other service obligations. Military trainees should contact their Service GME office for specifics.

For civilian trainees funded by the VA, there is no service obligation.
