Program Description

At Jackson Health System, our Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers immersive, hands-on training in one of the nation’s busiest health systems. Residents gain broad clinical experience, develop strong decision-making and leadership skills, and are prepared to thrive in any emergency setting: confident, compassionate, and ready to lead.

Military Affiliation Highlights

Jackson Health System offers a position to one military resident per year. Established in the heart of Miami more than 100 years ago, Jackson Memorial Hospital is the largest public hospital in the nation with more than 1,550 beds and serves as the major teaching facility for the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Jackson Memorial is a safety-net hospital that serves the diverse population of Miami-Dade County, with an emergency department that sees an average of 120,000 patients annually. It's also home to Holtz Children’s Hospital, the Miami Burn Center, Miami Transplant Institute, and Ryder Trauma Center, the highest volume Level I adult and pediatric trauma center in Miami-Dade County.

Serving as the major academic and teaching hospital in South Florida, patients come to Jackson Memorial from all over the world for a level of care they cannot obtain elsewhere. When combined with the ED experience obtained at Holy Cross Hospital, a UM Miller School of Medicine-affiliated community site, our residents are truly exposed to a wide array of patients and pathology, which is essential for training as an EM resident.

In addition, Jackson Health System and the Ryder Trauma Center partner with the U.S. Army Trauma Training Detachment, the Department of War’s Center of Excellence in trauma team training. This unique military–civilian collaboration brings Army Forward Resuscitative Surgical Teams to Miami for intensive simulation and real-world trauma care, working side-by-side with our physicians in one of the nation’s busiest trauma centers. This integration with our institution allows for opportunities for our residents to have additional exposure to forward surgical teams and mentors who are active members of the Army and understand the unique challenges our residents will face in the future.
