Program Description

Thank you for your interest in the VCU Emergency Medicine Residency Program! Our whole team is excited that you are taking time to learn about our residency, department, institution… and Richmond, Virginia.

We provide world class training in state-of-the-art facilities, and do so in a supportive and educationally sound environment. We have a broad mission statement for the program, but what we tell our applicants and graduates is that if you train here… you can go anywhere. Our program provides you with the tools needed to practice emergency medicine in any setting at any time. Our graduates are highly sought by employers and have always found a job or fellowship that fits their goals.

Most important to me is that our training comes with a great community. Our residents and faculty are genuinely excited to be here, and that enthusiasm is contagious. Everyone who comes to VCU can feel that sense of being welcomed and finding their place no matter what their background or prior experiences. The larger community of Richmond is a fantastic place to live and explore. Residents can live across a spectrum of options including downtown apartments to a farm in the country… and still be 15 minutes from work. RVA offers the benefits of a smaller sized city with all the entertainment, dining, and experiences you could want, without the traffic or sprawl of larger cities.

Please look through our website and see why VCU EM is a great fit for you!

Military Affiliation Highlights

Our program offers two positions each year through the Air Force Operational Emergency Medicine Program. Additional positions are occasionally offered depending on funding and the needs of the Air Force. VCU Health is a quaternary care hospital with a large volume of critically ill patients. We are a Level 1 trauma center and burn center so military applicants will feel very well prepared for a future military career. Residents complete rotations on trauma, surgical trauma ICU, burn experiences, and see a wide variety of acutely ill patients in our emergency department. The program is supportive of required military training during residency and our OEM residents feel supported, well prepared, and integrated into our entire residency team.
