The Naval Medical Forces Development Command is Mission-Driven and, most importantly, People-Powered! Today we highlight Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Braden Johnson, the Special Operations Combat Medic course Trauma 1 noncommissioned officer in charge, Naval Special Operations Medical Institute (NSOMI), Navy Medicine Operational Training Command, who plays a critical role in forging the next generation of special operations medical personnel.

Johnson joined the Navy at 19 years old, seeking both a broader horizon and the discipline needed to build a purposeful future.

“I joined the Navy to get out of my hometown and set my life on a path of upward trajectory,” Johnson said. “The Navy gave me the opportunity to push myself outside my comfort zone and to grow in a challenging but fair environment.”

With 13 years of service, Johnson said his drive toward operational medicine was clear from the start.

“Early in my career I heard about the Special Operations Combat Medic course and the elite medics that it produces,” Johnson said. “I wanted to be in a role that was as close to infantry as possible and one that would allow me to go become a special operations combat medic, therefore Corpsman was the only choice.”

Today, Johnson channels that operational experience directly into the classroom and practical training environments, instructing future medics at the Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center (JSOMTC). For him, teaching adult learners operating at the highest stakes is a demanding yet deeply fulfilling calling.

“I enjoy the teaching aspects of my current position the most,” Johnson said. “Andragogy is a unique and challenging field, and seeing the transformation of the students is what keeps me motivated and continuing to work hard. The best reward in my mind is the knowledge that our U.S. and allied service members are in good hands because of the high-quality training we facilitate here at JSOMTC.”

Operating at the front edge of Force Development and Force Generation, Johnson and the NSOMI instructor cadre are directly responsible for producing combat-ready medical personnel qualified to execute high-risk missions around the globe.

“My role as an NSOMI trauma block instructor supports force development and generation by training and educating future special operations forces medics,” Johnson said. “We certify our graduates under the coveted USSOCOM Special Operations-Advanced Tactical Paramedic credential—a requirement for special operations missions worldwide.”

To keep training sharp, rigorous, and relevant to the demands of modern combat, Johnson and his team actively foster Navy Medicine’s “Get Real, Get Better” culture by breaking down barriers to communication and focusing on fundamentals.

“At NSOMI, we implement the ‘Get Real, Get Better’ mindset by working in a highly collaborative environment where, regardless of your age, gender, paygrade, or status, your voice will be heard,” Johnson said. “We focus on mastery of the basics in all things Navy, and then provide peer-to-peer feedback on ways to improve ourselves for the next evolution.”

Outside the high tempo demands of the trauma lanes and classroom instruction, Johnson stays grounded by spending quality time outdoors with family, hitting the slopes skiing, tending to his garden and lawn, or cruising the neighborhood on bike rides with his son.

Thank you, HM1 Johnson, for training and developing the elite medical forces who safeguard our warfighters on the front lines!
