Program Description
The SSM Health-Saint Louis University Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year training program dedicated to delivering excellent emergency medicine education and health care to the St. Louis region. Based at the SSM Health - Saint Louis University Hospital—a modern urban facility with a 43-bed emergency department, advanced imaging, and specialized trauma, behavioral health, and fast-track areas—the program offers residents exposure to high-acuity cases as a Level I trauma, STEMI, and Stroke Center.
Residents benefit from a diverse patient population and unique opportunities such as the Air Force C-STAR program. The curriculum combines bedside teaching, didactics, simulations, labs, and annual cadaver training, fostering progressive responsibility and leadership skills. Graduates pursue diverse careers nationwide, including fellowships, medical directorships, and academic positions, reflecting the program’s strong emphasis on clinical excellence and professional development.
Military Affiliation Highlights
SSM Health - Saint Louis University Hospital Emergency Medicine offers two (2) positions a year to the US Air Force Operational Emergency Medicine Program. The Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills St. Louis is an Air Force medical training program embedded at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. It provides specialized, hands-on combat trauma training for Air Force medics, nurses, and physicians using high-fidelity simulations and real-world trauma cases.
SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center in St. Louis with state certifications in both Missouri and Illinois. The hospital treats more than 46,000 emergency medicine patients per year, including over 5,000 trauma cases, and has an acuity level higher than the national average. We have multiple faculty members with military experience including Air Force, Army, and Navy.

- Name, military service, and scholarship program (HPSP, HSCP, USU, or currently on active duty as a physician), e-mail address, and phone number
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement/Letter of Intent (may use the same statement in your graduate medicine education application packet)
- Self-report of USMLE/COMLEX scores
- Include the number of attempts and whether or not you have failed any attempts
- If USMLE/COMLEX step/level 2 scores are not available, please provide the exam date, if scheduled
- Self-report of any failed courses or clinical rotations during medical school
- Self-report of current and/or previous adverse comments in medical school transcript, military, or GME records that will appear in your GME application. If you are unsure of what you should disclose, contact the appropriate organization that will be submitting the information for your GME application, e.g. your school’s student affairs office regarding your medical school transcript.
- Up to four letters of recommendation (with at least one from an emergency medicine physician) Please be aware that emergency medicine faculty writing letters of recommendations should use the Council of Residency Directors Standardized Letter of Evaluation form. This can be downloaded from the CORD website.

Medical Student rotations can be scheduled through the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities program. 4th Year, Army and Navy HPSP/HSCP students are not permitted to rotate on active-duty training status. Air Force students require approval.
