Director of Medical Education
Lt. Col. (Dr.) Christopher G. Yheulon serves as the Designated Institutional Official and Director of Graduate Medical Education at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He provides institutional oversight for Tripler's graduate medical and allied health education programs, chairs the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and works with institutional, Army, Defense Health Agency, and regional academic partners to support accreditation, educational quality, and the military medical readiness mission.
A board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Yheulon also serves as Chief of Bariatric Surgery at TAMC and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He previously served as Chief of General Surgery, Associate Program Director, and Director of Research for Tripler's General Surgery Residency. His clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive, robotic, bariatric, foregut, and complex abdominal wall surgery.
Dr. Yheulon graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed general surgery residency at TAMC and Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship training at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
His operational experience includes two overseas deployments with the 10th Combat Support Hospital in Kuwait and as a member of the 102nd Forward Surgical Team in Syria.
Dr. Yheulon has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has delivered invited national presentations on military surgical education, left-handedness in surgery, and the use of artificial intelligence in graduate medical education. His professional service includes national committee roles with the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Defense Health Agency.
His recognition includes the Army Medical Department 9A Proficiency Designator, multiple awards for excellence in surgical education, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Combat Device.
