Why I serve: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Dental Laboratory Specialist turns craftsmanship into military service

Image of WHY I SERVE: LRMC Dental Laboratory Specialist Turns Craftsmanship into Military Service. Spc. Koffi Ballogou, a dental laboratory specialist assigned to Dental Health Activity Rheinland-Pfalz at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, poses in front of the Dental Clinic sign Oct 27, 2026. A native of Lome, Togo, Ballogou draws on his technical skills and dedication to restore service members dental health and confidence, while pursuing his goal of becoming an Army dentist

Growing up in Lomé, Togo along the coast of Gulf of Guinea, Spc. Koffi Ballogou could not have known that his path would eventually lead him to serve in the U.S. Army. In Lomé, life moves to the tempo of coastal trade and bustling open-air markets, yet one young native traded the Atlantic breeze of West Africa for the uniform of an American Soldier; finding a path where craftsmanship meets service.

Today, as an Army dental laboratory specialist assigned to Dental Health Activity Rheinland-Pfalz at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, he combines technical skill and attention to detail to help restore service members’ dental health and confidence.

"My journey wasn't easy. First, I had to navigate the hurdles of becoming a legal resident," Ballogou said. "Then came the challenge of learning English. In those early days, I was constantly translating words and sentences back into French in my head just to process what people were asking me."

Ballogou’s journey to military service began with challenges familiar to many immigrants: establishing legal residency, learning a new language, and finding opportunities to build a future in the United States.

"My journey wasn't easy. First, I had to navigate the hurdles of becoming a legal resident," Ballogou said. "Then came the challenge of learning English. In those early days, I was constantly translating words and sentences back into French in my head just to process what people were asking me."

Determined to overcome those obstacles, Ballogou continued improving his English and pursuing opportunities. After obtaining lawful permanent resident status and developing the language skills needed to meet the Army’s requirements, he enlisted seeking a way to give back to the country that had welcomed him.

His military training at Fort Sam Houston introduced him to the importance of dental laboratory work in supporting service members’ health and readiness.

"The training at Fort Sam Houston was intense, but it opened my eyes to the impact we have," Ballogou said. "We weren't just learning how to make teeth; we were learning how to restore a Soldier's confidence and health. The moment you fabricate your first actual denture and realize it is going to help a fellow service member eat, speak, and smile again, that’s when all those long, stressful hours in the classroom completely payoff."

Army dental laboratory specialists work behind the scenes to fabricate and repair dental prosthetics and appliances that help patients restore oral function. Their work requires precision, technical knowledge, and an understanding of each patient’s needs.

For Ballogou, after quiet hours spent working in the lab are worth it when patients see the results.

"I absolutely love seeing the smiles on my patients' faces when they get their new crowns or dentures," Ballogou said. "In the lab, you are focused on the millimeter details, but when you see them smile, you see the big picture. You see a person who can finally eat without pain and laugh without being self-conscious."

Ballogou's commitment to excellence extends beyond the dental laboratory. He has pursued opportunities to challenge himself physically and professionally, participating in the Army’s Best Squad and Best Medical competitions.

"I am always looking for ways to push my limits and become a better Soldier," said Ballogou. "Taking part in the Best Squad and Best Medical competitions was an incredible experience. It pushed me physically and mentally and showed me what I’m truly capable of. Winning the Company Soldier of the Quarter and ultimately being named Soldier of the Year wasn't just a personal victory; it was proof that no matter where you start or what your job is in the Army, hard work and dedication will always set you apart."

1st Sgt. Keiden Jones, senior noncommission officer assigned to Dental Health Activity Rheinland-Pfalz at LRMC, said Ballogou demonstrates how technical expertise and a commitment to physical readiness contribute to the Army mission.

"He is incredibly proficient at his job, and he’s constantly working to sharpen his skills as a Soldier," Jones said. "On top of being in top-tier physical shape, he is highly intelligent, outgoing, and the kind of person who actively grabs hold of every opportunity that comes his way."

Jones said Ballogou earned a place on the unit’s Best Squad Team and helped the team finish third in the competition.

"Honestly, I don’t know how he finds the time or the energy to juggle all of these massive commitments and still bring so much genuine passion to his day job," Jones said. "It’s incredible to watch."

Lonnie Dixon, dental hygienist assigned to Dental Health Activity Rheinland-Pfalz said Ballogou’s enthusiasm positively influences the clinic and its staff.

"In my 27 years of working in this field, I have never seen anyone as dedicated and motivated as this young man," Dixon said. "He brings an incredible energy and charisma to the clinic, especially for someone so young. I really want to encourage him to keep this momentum going, and if he does, there is no limit to how far he will go in the military."

Ballogou said he intends to continue building on his experience as an enlisted Soldier while pursuing higher education and a future in military dentistry.

"I want to accomplish as much as I possibly can while I'm on the enlisted side," Ballogou said. "My ultimate plan is to earn my bachelor's in biology, transition over to the officer side, and eventually become a military dentist."

Through his work in the dental laboratory, competitive achievements and commitment to professional development, Ballogou demonstrates how technical proficiency and personal determination contribute to the health and readiness of the force. His journey from Togo to military service reflects his drive to make the most of every opportunity and continue serving in a new capacity.

"We couldn't be prouder of the man he’s become, and we’re behind him every step of the way as he chases his dreams,” his mother said.
