Program Disclosures

As articulated in Standard I.B.2, programs may have “admission and employment policies that directly relate to affiliation or purpose” that may be faith-based or secular in nature. However, such policies and practices must be disclosed to the public. Therefore, programs are asked to respond to the following question.

Does the program or institution require students, trainees, and/or staff (faculty) to comply with specific policies or practices related to the institution’s affiliation or purpose? Such policies or practices may include, but are not limited to, admissions, hiring, retention policies, and/or requirements for completion that express mission and values?

Postdoctoral Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

The mission of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology is to produce an advanced level of competence in the specialty of clinical neuropsychology, to complete the education and training necessary for independent practice in the specialty, and to develop specific skills relating to the unique applications of clinical neuropsychology in the military environment. The program aims to achieve this through clinical, didactic, and academic training activities. The program is also designed to prepare fellows for the process of seeking board certification.

Does the program require that applicants have received a minimum number of hours of the following at time of application? If yes, indicate how many:

  • Total Direct Contact Intervention Hours: Not applicable
  • Total Direct Contact Assessment Hours: Not applicable

Describe any other required minimum criteria used to screen applicants:

To be considered for the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology, the applicant must be an Active Duty Army psychologist who is a citizen of the United States and must have completed an American Psychological Association accredited or Canadian Psychological Association accredited doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. Applicants must have also completed an APA or CPA accredited internship program that includes some training in neuropsychology. It is advantageous for applicants to have had coursework in neuropsychology and neurosciences in graduate school and clinical experience in neuropsychology during the practicum years as well. In all cases, candidacy for postdoctoral training in clinical neuropsychology must be based on demonstrated skills as a health service provider in the scientist practitioner model. Applicants must possess the Army 73B specialty skills indicator and meet other requirements for selection as determined by the Army Medical Department Long Term Health Education and Training program based upon the discretion and guidance of the Psychology Consultant to the United States Army Surgeon General. Typically, one active duty United States Army psychologist is accepted for the WRNMMC Postdoctoral Fellowship Training Program in Clinical Neuropsychology each year. Applicants must also possess an unrestricted license to practice psychology in one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia. The military beneficiary population includes a wide range of cultural and ethnic groups, so knowledge and experience in cultural and individual diversity is therefore highly desirable.

The knowledge base upon entry into the fellowship should include doctoral level competency in the following substantive areas of psychology consistent with Houston Conference guidelines:

  • Statistics and methodology
  • Learning, cognition, and perception
  • Social psychology and personality
  • Biological basis of behavior
  • Life span development
  • History
  • Cultural and individual differences and diversity
