Qualifying Life Events

Military families experience lots of change. Many of these changes count as QLEs for TRICARE.

QLEs provide a unique opportunity for beneficiaries to make enrollment changes. With TRICARE Prime, including the US Family Health Plan (USFHP), and TRICARE Select, the only other time beneficiaries can make enrollment changes is during the annual TRICARE Open Season.

A QLE for one family member creates a chance for all eligible family members to change their TRICARE health plan during a 90-day eligibility window. A QLE may also mean a beneficiary is no longer eligible for a TRICARE health plan.

Some QLEs may mean beneficiaries become newly eligible for certain premium-based health plans (TRICARE Reserve Select, TRICARE Retired Reserve, TRICARE Young Adult, and the Continued Health Care Benefit Program). Enrollment in premium-based health plans can take place at any time throughout the year.

Use the tabs on the left to learn about your options after a QLE and what actions you can take.

Types of Qualifying Life Events

There are more than 20 different life events that count as TRICARE QLEs. Rules and restrictions apply to each. Download the TRICARE Qualifying Events Fact Sheet at www.tricare.mil/publications or visit www.tricare.mil/lifeevents to learn more.

Taking Action After a QLE

After experiencing a qualifying life event, beneficiaries must take action to ensure uninterrupted TRICARE coverage. Even if you don't want to make any changes to your health plan, you must update your information in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System.

Follow these steps after your QLE

TRICARE 101

TRICARE 101 helps beneficiaries get familiar with TRICARE terms, options, plans, and more. Whether new to TRICARE or already a TRICARE plan enrollee, learning the basics can help beneficiaries make informed choices and take command of their health.
