Targeted Care

The Military Health System is implementing targeted care at all military hospitals and clinics. Targeted care helps us give you the right mental health support for your specific needs, whether it’s an individual appointment, group therapy or non-clinical support.

How it Works

Targeted care synchronizes and expands our resources to address your specific needs. The process starts with a preliminary assessment.

You’ll meet with a technician who will:

  • Listen to your concerns.
  • Assess your needs.
  • Match you to the best resource.

Options may include an appointment with:

  • A primary or specialty care consultant.
  • Military and family life counselors.
  • A chaplain.

You don’t need a referral and you won’t be turned away or denied specialty care. Each military hospital and clinic will leverage their local clinical and non-clinical resources to give you the right mental health support.

When You Can Expect it at Your Military Hospital or Clinic

The Defense Health Agency piloted targeted care at nine military hospitals and clinics in May 2023. The pilot ran for six months and ended in October 2023. We’ll begin to roll out targeted care to all military hospitals and clinics in 2024. Our goal is to have targeted care MHS-wide by the end of calendar year 2024.

  • Making an appointment with a specialty mental health provider.
  • Connecting you to non-medical support such as military and family life counselors, chaplains, or Military OneSource.

If after your primary assessment, you’re matched to specialty mental health, you may have the option for individual or group therapy.

When contacting your mental health clinic:

  • You’ll work with a technician who will listen to your concerns and match you to the best resource to meet your needs. 
  • Our providers will work closely with the technicians to ensure you get to the right resource. 
  • If it’s decided that a primary or specialty care is the best option, you’ll get an appointment at the clinic.

You can call your primary care clinic to make an appointment or simply walk in for a preliminary assessment with a technician.

You won’t be turned away or denied specialty care if you want it. Let the technician know at the preliminary screening and an appointment with the next available specialty care provider will be made.
