Program Description

The Yale Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency is a fully accredited six-year integrated educational program. A broadly based program, the first few years are characterized by learning essential skills in preoperative and postoperative management, the management of acutely ill patients, critical care management, and increasing experience in plastic surgery and related disciplines. The subsequent years are exclusively devoted to plastic surgery with educational experience in craniofacial, hand and upper extremity, microsurgery for oncologic and traumatic defects, general reconstructive care, and cosmetic surgery.

Tailored for residents in their advanced years of training, our program’s “senior resident clinic,” offers trainees a unique opportunity to hone skills in aesthetic surgery alongside seasoned faculty in cosmetic practice, at two of our ambulatory locations. Through hands-on experience and faculty mentorship, residents gain valuable experience in minimally invasive surgical techniques while providing patients high-value care. Additionally, in the PGY5 year, residents are able to take advantage of international surgical service in developing countries and 10 weeks of individually designed educational programs. Residents have elected research and clinical experiences worldwide during this time period.

Military Affiliation Highlights

One dedicated military position is available each year for an Army applicant. Faculty have experience working with previous military sponsored residents including a current alum working as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Walter Reed Medical Center. All residents rotate at VA Connecticut Medical Center located nearby in West Haven, CT. Yale-New Haven Hospital is a level I trauma center which allows significant experience in management of trauma, and all residents rotate in the Surgical ICU.
