Program Description

The General Surgery Residency provides residents with the range and depth of surgical experience and academic exposure required to develop superior surgical skills and the ability to make informed, independent judgments. BMC is the largest safety-net hospital in New England. It's also the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services. Our Trauma & Acute Care Surgery service provides a high volume of complex operative trauma cases to ensure residents gain command of preoperative, operative, and postoperative patient care across the spectrum of general surgery.

Beyond BMC, residents rotate at the:

  • VA Boston Healthcare System
  • Boston Children’s Hospital
  • Cape Cod Hospital
  • Roger Williams Medical Center

We provide training that's broad and deep.

Military Affiliation Highlights

The General Surgery Residency Program at Boston Medical Center/Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine provides comprehensive general surgery training to prepare the next generations of military surgeons. We're a designated Air Force surgery training program. There are six categorical residency spots each year, with one spot reserved for an active duty military resident serving in the Air Force and chosen through the military match.

Adding to the clinical training, the program director, Dr. Donald Hess is a former Air Force HPSP scholarship recipient who was deployed to Saudi Arabia. Other faculty in the Department of Surgery also include a Navy reserve surgeon and several Department of War research & training grant recipients.
