Resources

Many military, government and private organizations stand ready to assist wounded warrior amputees in a variety of ways. You can learn more about the latest in amputee treatment, technology and rehabilitation through the following resources:  

  • Amputation System of Care: includes physicians, rehabilitation therapists, prosthetists and other specialty clinicians, with goal to provide life-long care to Veterans living with limb loss.  
  • Blast Injury Resource Program: brings together the medical, materiel development, test and evaluation, and operational communities to develop strategies for the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of blast injuries. 
  • Borden Institute: fosters and promotes military academic excellence in medicine through publications of military medical textbooks, specialty titles and studies and a history of military medicine series.
  • Center for the Intrepid: dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of military amputees, burn victims and those who have had functional limb loss. 
  • Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program: provides assistive technology and accommodations to support individuals with disabilities and wounded, ill and injured Service members throughout the Federal Government in accessing information and communication technology.
  • Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities: promotes quality, value and optimal outcomes through rehab facility accreditation and consultation.
  • Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care Program: manages severely wounded, ill or injured patients from medical evacuation through inpatient care, outpatient rehabilitation, and eventual return to active duty or transition from the military.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellencepromotes state-of-the-science care from point-of-injury to reintegration for service members, veterans, and their families to prevent and mitigate consequences of mild to severe traumatic brain injury. 
  • Defense & Veterans Center for Integrative Pain Management: improves the management of pain in military and civilian medicine  and to guide research and policy regarding pain and its treatment. 
  • Hearing Center of Excellence: fosters and promotes the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, rehabilitation and research of hearing loss and auditory injury. It supports the development, exchange and adoption of best practices, research, measures of effectiveness and clinical care guidelines to reduce the prevalence and cost of hearing loss and tinnitus among warriors and veterans.  
  • Joint Trauma System: improve trauma care delivery and patient outcomes across the continuum of care utilizing continuous performance improvement and evidence-based medicine driven by the concurrent collection and analysis of data maintained in the DOD Trauma Registry.
  • Military Operational Medicine Research Program: conducts collaborative research with university and commercial laboratories and other federal agencies oriented toward solving critical problems facing the Army today and in the future.
  • National Intrepid Center of Excellence: dedicated to providing cutting-edge evaluation, treatment planning, research and education for service members and their families dealing with the complex interactions of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and psychological health (PH) conditions. 
  • Polytrauma/TBI System of Care: supports Veterans that have been affected by traumatic injuries that may have impacted their cognitive function as well as physical function. These experts also specialize in care for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Prosthetics & Sensory Aids: provides comprehensive support to optimize health and independence of the Veteran. PSAS is the premier source of prosthetic and orthotic services, sensory aids, medical equipment, and support services for Veterans.  
  • Psychological Health Center of Excellence: provides a gateway to information on deployment health and healthcare for healthcare providers, service members, veterans, and their families. 
  • Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Military Advanced Training Center: a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of America’s sons and daughters recovering from injuries sustained in service. Sign-in is required to access this site.
  • Vision Center of Excellence: leads and advocates for programs and initiatives to improve vision health, optimize readiness and enhance quality of life for Service members
