Providers have the option to refer patients to the TBI Outpatient Program or the Intensive Outpatient Program. See below for program-specific referral directions.

TBI Outpatient Program

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence's Referral Management Team will determine appropriate candidates for the TBI Outpatient Program upon reviewing referrals.

Inside the National Capital Region: Provider referrals may be entered directly into MHS Genesis.

In MHS Genesis:

• Under Referral Reason - write '6224 NICOE' and add request of service/evaluation
• Under Medical Services - select 'Brain Injury Medicine'
• Under Referral Order Type - select appropriate request
• Allow for 1-2 business days processing time. Patients can contact NICOE scheduling directly at 301-319-3710

Outside the National Capital Region: For information about referrals to any NICoE program, the primary care provider should email the Referral Management Team. A team member will contact you to follow up on your request.

TBI Service Outpatient Eligibility

Must meet the following criteria:

• Department of Defense beneficiaries 18 and older diagnosed with a TBI
• Active referral from current primary care manager

IOP Eligibility

IOP patients must meet the following criteria:

• Active Duty Service Member
• Must have care established with primary care manager
• Must have completed comprehensive behavioral health evaluation within 30 days prior to application submission
• Diagnosed mild to moderate TBI and/or associated health conditions who have not responded to traditional treatment
