The Medical Surveillance Monthly Report—or MSMR—published continually since 1995, is the peer-reviewed journal of the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division. For more than 30 years, MSMR has transformed complex military health data into credible, actionable information for clinicians, commanders, public health professionals, and policy-makers. MSMR publishes monthly reports describing the incidence, distribution, impact, or trends of illness and injuries among members of the U.S. Armed Forces and other beneficiaries of the Military Health System.

The June/July 2026 issue of MSMR presents the annual issue focusing on the burden of morbidity and mortality and their associated health care within the Military Health System. The issue features an overview of absolute and relative morbidity burdens among U.S. active component service members in 2025; with related reports on both hospitalizations and ambulatory care visits, and reports for morbidity burdens among deployed active and reserve component members as well as medical evacuations from four geographic combatant commands; complemented by a report on absolute and relative morbidity burdens among U.S. Coast Guard active component members; followed by a Surveillance Snapshot on illness and injury burdens among recruit trainees of the U.S. Armed Forces. The issue also features a comprehensive report on absolute and relative morbidity burdens among non-service member beneficiaries of the Military Health System. Three Surveillance Snapshots provide 2025 data on illness and injury burdens among reserve component members as well as Coast Guard Reserve members, in addition to telehealth use trends from 2021 through 2025.

Heat Illnesses by Location, Active Component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2012-2016 Fact Sheet

This fact sheet provides details on heat illnesses by location during a five-year surveillance period from 2012 through 2016. 11,967 heat-related illnesses were diagnosed at more than 250 military installations and geographic locations worldwide. Three Army Installations accounted for close to one-third of all heat illnesses during the period.
